Excellent, Practical, and Biblical Guide to Divorce and Remarriage
Nathan Albright (Tampa, FL) 1/20/2009 7:54 AM
In this excellent book, part of the Biblical Blueprints Series, Ray Sutton gives an excellent and scriptural guide to divorce and remarriage. As a subject I have more knowledge of than I would wish (including being a child in the contentious divorce of my parents), this book provided a sensible way to deal with those problems. The book looks at a wide variety of practical and theological issues concerning divorce and re-marriage, including the biblical grounds for divorce (based on the concept of covenantal death), the need for council, the waiting period for remarriage, sanctions on guilty spouses, the establishment of ecclesiastical courts (something I believe many churches should establish), as well as the roles that the family and state play in marriage by upholding the biblical law. The book will draw some fire for being overly harsh to some and overly permissive to others, but it provides a biblically grounded way of dealing with the horrific problem of divorce and re-marriage that has engulfed our society. Of particular interest as well is the impressive scriptural exegesis used in such examples as the prodigal son and Esther (looking at the subject of adoption), Judah and Tamar and the woman caught in adultery (to look at the problem of disqualifying covenental lawsuits), and the very appropriate use of stories drawn from counseling as well to provide helpful examples, both negative and positive, in dealing with this thorny issue. For those who have been divorced or are seeking to marry into a family after a divorce, this book provides some very excellent wisdom to avoid compounding the suffering.

About the Title

Does the Bible have answers for the heart-wrenching problems of divorce and remarriage?
Yes. Absolutely.

One out of every two marriages in the United States now ends in divorce. Almost half of the children born today will be living in a broken home before they reach the age of eighteen. Forty million Americans have been married more than once, and the number keep increasing. This trend has now touched every sector of our societyincluding the Church.

Most pastors and theologians have been caught off guard. And as a result, they have resorted to extremismliberal permissiveness on the one hand, austere legalism on the other. They have been unable to genuinely help those caught in the traumas of divorce and remarriage. They don't have answers. But the Bible does.

In this volume of the groundbreaking Biblical Blueprints Series, Rev. Ray Sutton outlines those answers specifically. He avoids the extremes by providing clear, balanced instruction from Scripture.
The Bible tells us what to dowhen, where, how, and why. It provides us with a "blueprint" for faithfulness in the midst of divorce and remarriage. Second Chance lays out that "blueprint" simply, practically, an understandably. It offers hope and help for the hurting.
