Myths, Lies, & Half-truths
Kimberland Hough (Fife Lake, MI) 7/5/2010 11:02 PM
This is a well-written book with a compelling message for contemporary Christians. In short readable chapters, Gary demolishes the myths, lies, and half-truths that have kept Christians disengaged for most of my lifetime. Rather than wringing your hands in despair and hoping for the rescue of the Rapture, you should read this book and apply it's biblical logic to the culture war for the souls of your family members, your neighbors and our American culture. Gary shows you how to win and we can't afford to wait! Arm your heart and mind with the nuggets of truth found in this book alone and you will be a formidable force for Christ.

More like a manifesto!
Jason Lollar (Springfield, VA) 6/2/2010 11:08 AM
Unlike many other worthy axes that have taken a swing or two at the popular Christian fear of having a biblical, world impact (and I’ve read many), this tome goes ahead and chops the whole tree down. Myths, Lies, & Half-Truths covers a gamut of modern fallacies such as “you can’t legislate morality, judge not, the myth of neutrality, politics is dirty, separation of church and state,” and many more…I was particularly impressed with DeMar’s treatment of Old Testament slavery. But be prepared for the cold hard truth…Gary directly addresses even some of the most faithful and popular gospel proclaimers (in an irenic fashion) with their inconsistencies that are literally stifling the church's ability to fulfill her full calling on Earth. Despite being riddled with research and insightful quotes (even though I hate endnotes, they are a tremendous source for your Amazon wish list), these summaries are surprisingly concise and flow in a very logical and readable flow (I’m also a stickler for editing and I think I only found a missing comma at the bottom of pg 236…ha). And it really keeps the attention…I read it over the weekend in two sittings. I highly recommend Myths, Lies, & Half-Truths as it renews the Christian’s faith in the true power of the gospel and our Lord’s intent to transform every area of culture (law, politics, art, entertainment, economics, et al.) when a truly biblical world and life view is humbly, yet unashamedly wielded by His obedient servants in the authority of Jesus Christ, who does rule on high. This is a worthy contender for your top shelf of apologetics, and is great for refreshing the salty experts (I will use for discussion starter and lesson outlines) and introducing the newer students to a comprehensive and coherent biblical worldview apologetic, and reintroducing us all to the last 2,000 years of Christian reformers and culture builders.

About the Title

Myths, Lies, and Half-Truths: How Misreading the Bible Neutralizes Christians and Empowers Liberals, Secularists, and Atheists

Myths, Lies, and Half-Truths takes a closer look at God's Word and applies it to erroneous misinterpretations of the Bible that have resulted in a virtual shut-down of the church's full-orbed mission in the world (Acts 20:27).

Due to these mistaken interpretations and applications of popular Bible texts to contemporary issues, the Christian faith is being thrown out and trampled under foot by men (Matt. 5:13).

Too many Christians believe that the Bible is irrelevant this side of heaven. While the homosexual community, which makes up about 1% of our population, exercises tremendous impact on our culture and laws, Christians, who make up about 35% of the population, have voluntarily abandoned the culture war, electing to hide the gospel under a bushel instead.

Our nation is in a crisis. The world is crying out for answers in the face of bewildering and seemingly unsolvable problems. Myths, Lies, and Half-Truths shows that the Bible has real answers to these problems—answers the church is currently ignoring.

Christianity's failure to show itself practical in the past 150 years has guaranteed the success of secularism and militant Islam, both of which are doing incalculable harm at home and abroad. The rejection of any type of "this-worldly" application of the Bible has resulted in the proliferation of man-centered worldviews that have steadily drained the life out of our world and left behind a spiritual vacuum.

Will the church of Jesus Christ be prepared with biblical answers for the millions who will be ready to follow the light of the gospel as the folly of humanism and Islam is made manifest? (2 Tim. 3:9).

Now is the time to make the necessary theological preparations. It is my prayer that Myths, Lies, and Half-Truths will help in that task.

—Gary DeMar
