About the Title:
When I was a seminary student, the attracting feature of the curriculum was that it was said to have been built on the framework of a “Christian worldview.” But when it came to issues like law, economics, and politics nary a word was uttered. (You can read my account of this in the three chapters I wrote for Theonomy: An Informed Response.)

The limited nature of the worldview approach hit me when my wife and I attended a series of talks on economics presented by Dr. Gary North and Dr. Richard Mouw at the seminary. This was in 1978. Dr. Mouw told us that he couldn’t wait to get to heaven so he would have time to read the collected works of Karl Marx. I almost puked. Dr. North gave an exposition of Isaiah 1:22: “Your silver has become dross, your drink diluted with water.” I was amazed how some of the professors reacted to a real-life application of this passage as Dr. North applied his principles to the horrible economic conditions of the Carter years. We forget that there was double-digit inflation and double-digit mortgage rates. After hearing Dr. North’s lecture, I purchased a copy of his book An Introduction to Christian Economics. The first chapter caught my attention: “The Biblical Critique of Inflation.” I was hooked. That’s why I went to seminary. I wanted to know what the Bible said about these issues. Karl Marx had done more damage to the 20th century than any single individual, and we are about to adopt his manifesto hook, line, and sinker.

My wife and I read An Introduction to Christian Economics from cover to cover. Our understanding of economics skyrocketed. If you want to understand economics, then this is the place to start. While some of the chapters are dated since the book was published in 1973, the principles are not. In fact, it’s helpful to look back to see the failure of the policies that are being repeated today. We are headed in the same direction but at a faster clip. If you are going to be effective in teaching your children (and yourself), then you will need the proper biblical grounding. An Introduction to Christian Economics is the place to start.
