About the Title: In this first story in the outstanding three-book Crown & Covenant series, young Duncan M'Kethe finds himself caught up in the web of Sir James Turner, the former Covenanter who has turned traitor to lead their opposing persecutors. Duncan is torn by his hatred for Turners Dragoons, who have treated his friends cruelly, and his father's instruction to love one's enemies. Duncan strives to be true to Jesus Christ while attempting to rescue his father from enemy hands.
The author masterfully weaves a story of historical fiction while introducing historical figures and places into this account of a fictional family. He provides the reader a view of 17th-century Scottish culture and Christianity while being caught up in the realistic suspense and believable characters. Integrating religious and philosophical questions, which the main character must deal with, the author provides an opportunity for the reader to think through those same questions in light of scripture. A glossary of Scottish terms and a timeline of Covenanting history are helpful additions to this volume.
This first book takes time to get into, but the reader will be rewarded if he sticks with it.
