Christianity and the American Commonwealth
William Keith Mathison (Battle Ground, WA) 4/22/2010 11:13 AM
The write-up about Christianity and the American Commonwealth at American Vision is excellent. AV writes such great reviews of their book I am always buying new ones to read!! I will add that this 180 page book is a very quick-interesting-informative read. The author shows the importance of Christianity for exalting a nation, and determining it's character. Christian teachings were the seed-thoughts of our political constitutions. The book contrasts historical examples of other nations that were not Christian. I am so thankful I was born in America instead of one of those countries!! Did you know that in America the State was an outgrowth of the Church? The Christian religion was meant to be the motivation and counselor of the State. America was set up as a Christian nation, constructed by Bible believing people for Christian ends, with the Christian religion the common law of the land (I am currently reading "Sir William Blackstone and the Common Law"). Our school and college systems were creations of Christianity. The founders knew Christianity was not narrow or fettered, but emancipated the mind. They knew a school system created in Christianity closed the door of the jail. So much for our current schools that can not find room for prayer!! The facts in this book show we are a Christian nation but unfortunately we are living during a generation that has forgotten God. The book says the future hope of our republic rests on Christianity so I pray for revival in the land!! We need to quit being ruled by the immoral minority! This 100 year old book has been re-published thanks to American Vision much to the chagrin of the history revisionists. All the more reason to read it.

Subtitle: The Influence of Christianity in Making This Nation

About the Title: Originally published in 1898, Christianity and the American Commonwealth is one of the best summaries of the impact of Christianity on America. Galloway leaves no historical fact unturned in his demonstration that America was founded as a Christian nation. Furthermore, he proves that without the Gospel and the application of all of God's Word to all of life, civilizations turn despotic and crumble. In a day when Christian leaders call for the abandonment of politics, Galloway's book is a breath of fresh air. In many ways this book was prophetic. He saw what would happen if America rejected her Biblical foundations or if Christians retreated from their engagement in society.

Although written more than 100 years ago, Galloway's arguments are persuasively modern and must be heeded by today's church. There's no doubt that the ACLU will be terrified when this book gets back into popular circulation! Over one hundred images have been added in this newly republished version plus a chapter on the life of Charles Galloway.

Table of Contents:
  •  Religion and Civil Government
  •  The Christian Coming and Character of the Early Colonists
  •  The Christian Institutions and Laws of the Colonists
  •  Christian Education in the American Commonwealth
  •  Charles B. Galloway "Citizen, Patriot, Publicist"
Author: Charles B. Galloway

About the Author: Charles B. Galloway D.D, LL.D. (1849-1909) was born in Mississippi. At sixteen he entered the University of Mississippi as a Sophomore. While at the University he became a Christian and later felt called to preach the gospel. The five lectures that appear in Christianity and the American Commonwealth were presented at the Chapel in Emory College in March of 1898 in an effort to promote the cause of Christian education. Galloway's book is one of the best summaries of the impact of Christianity on America.
