From Plymouth Rock to the state constitutions and beyond, American history overflows with evidence of the profound role Christianity has played in the founding of our nation. The historical record fully documents the claim that America was founded by Christians to be a biblical “city on a hill.”
Sadly, however, that record is rarely consulted and often distorted. Academics and media elites dismiss the facts and create their own so they can claim that America’s founding had a secular beginning. Gary DeMar answers skeptical denials of America's Christian heritage as he presents evidence from a broad range of historical sources and lets the record speak for itself. Consider, for example, the following:
- Thomas Jefferson signed official documents “In the year of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
- Benjamin Franklin stood up at the Constitutional Convention and stated that “God governs in the affairs of men.”
- In 1892, the Supreme Court of the United States declared, “This is a Christian nation.”

This is the only country that the founding fathers were almost without exception God fearing Christian men, who consistently quoted scripture making their arguments for bringing us together as one nation, for the principles in our constitution, and for the rights that came later.
A Godly bunch of men formed this nation.
It is documented. The writing is their for everyone to read. God has blessed us.

Constitution Violates The One Essential Standard For Christian Nation

Has this series proved that the Constitution is a Christian document and that America is therefore a Christian nation? We must first establish some standard for evaluation.
As Christians we must go to the Bible to identify that standard. Without such a standard we are likely to be distracted by peripheral data that are irrelevant.
Throughout the Old Testament we find God insisting that the nation of Israel maintain its covenant relation with him by means of an oath to obey His law, often written. This is the defining characteristic of a “Christian nation.” There may be many other admirable things, but there is nothing that may be called a Christian nation. The legal system must be oath-bound to the law of God or it is not a Christian nation. (Neh 9:38)
By this standard, we are forced to conclude that “America’s Heritage” has failed to prove its case. It has demonstrated no essential link between Christianity and the Constitution.
Do Christian colleges constitute a national oath to God? No. Does the phrase “year of our Lord” constitute a national oath to God? No. Does excluding Sunday from the 10-day window to sign or veto a bill constitute a national oath to God? No. Do inscriptions on state-owned buildings constitute a national oath to God? No. Does any of the evidence presented in America’s Heritage constitute a national oath to God? No.
Therefore, America’s Heritage has failed to establish any vital link between Christianity and the Constitution. It has failed to demonstrate that the U.S. Constitution is a Christian document as defined by the Bible.
For this reason I would not recommend “America’s Heritage” for the serious student of American history.
